Objective
To construct a “toolbox” consisting of scientific, technological, socio-economic, climate change adaptation/mitigation, and policy tools, aimed at ameliorating negative impacts of ocean acidity in coral reefs.
Methods
Utilizing a novel continuous pH-alkalinity analyzer developed by Kayanne lab, alkalinity and pH will be monitored to understand the dynamics of ocean acidity to coral ecosystems.
Where
This study will be based upon the good practices in Onna Village, Okinawa. Fisherpersons in Onna Village have been culturing corals and seaweed in parallel for several decades with the empirical knowledge that they bring co-benefits to the other’s growth. This study will unravel the science behind the practice.
Investigation into other sites including Hawaii, Mayotte Island, Reunion, and Tonga are planned.
